AMI-ARCS 2006, a one day satellite workshop of MICCAI 2006, will serve as a forum for researchers involved in all aspects of Augmented environments for Medical Imaging including Augmented Reality in Computer-aided Surgery.

Oct 06, 2006 in Copenhagen, Denmark
IT University of Copenhagen

This workshop aims at continuing the tradition of Augmented Reality in Computer Aided Surgery (ARCS) 2003 and Workshop on Augmented environments for Medical Imaging and Computer-aided Surgery (AMI ARCS) 2004. For this reason, the workshop is named AMI-ARCS to not only present the objectives of the first ARCS but also invite researches working on broader aspects of augmentation such as image fusion, simulation and rendering to attend this workshop.

This workshop will serve as a forum for researchers involved in all aspects of Augmented Environments for Medical Imaging. In medical imaging, augmented environments aim to provide the physician with an enhanced perception of the patient either by fusing various image modalities of the patient or by presenting medical imagery directly into the physician's view of a patient, helping him to establish a direct relation between the imagery and the patient.

Communications emphasizing innovative work, shared software development, validation and clinical applications are strongly encouraged. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers in computer science, electrical engineering, physics, and clinical medicine to present the state-of-the-art developments in this ever-growing research area.

Proceedings

The accepted presentations are not considered as published since the workshop is only for discussion and sharing ideas within close circle of experts. All accepted presentations can thus be subject of submissions to any conference or journal.

The proceedings are online (access of the full paper PDFs are protected by password and only available for registered workshop attendances).

AMI-ARCS 2008, a one day satellite workshop of MICCAI 2008, will serve as a forum for researchers involved in all aspects of Augmented environments for Medical Imaging including Augmented Reality in Computer-aided Surgery.
In medical imaging, augmented environments aim to provide the physician with enhanced perception of the patient either by fusing various imaging modalities or by presenting image-derived information overlaid on the physician's view, establishing a direct relation between the image and the patient. The focus of this workshop will be innovative research into the technical aspects of augmentation, such as hardware and optical design, real-time implementations, registration and fusion, calibration, visualization and 3D perception as well as validation, clinical applications and clinical evaluation. In particular we will expect those presenting applications to describe the path to clinical introduction of their systems. We aim to include not only researchers in augmented reality but also those working on broader aspects of augmentation such as image fusion, simulation and rendering. AMI-ARCS will bring together researchers in computer science, electrical engineering, physics, and clinical medicine to present the state-of-the-art developments in this ever-growing research area.

Program Overview

Format

The format will be a full day workshop. The majority of the program will comprise innovative papers from researchers given as oral presentations. There will be a demonstration session during lunch, which will take place instead of a poster session, since augmented reality developments are not generally well presented by posters. There will also be a short discussion session at the end of the day. Anticipated number of participants: This workshop will be the third in a series of MICCAI workshops on augmented environments for medical imaging following AMI-ARCS 2004 & 2006. These had between 40 and 70 participants and this year we would anticipate attendance to be in a similar range, though probably towards the higher end due to increasing interest in this research area.

Invited speakers

Special Issue of a Journal

We will approach the editors of Medical Image Analysis about the possibility of a special issue comprising the best papers from the workshop.

This is a convenient service, so you do not have to come back and check all the time if something has changed. To subscribe, please add a bullet with your WikiName in alphabetical order to this list:

Format: TWiki handles entries in bullet list (<space><space><space>*) format containing the WikiName of a user; a WikiName with e-mail address; or a TWikiGroup. Examples:

  • Main.FredBloggs
  • Main.FredBloggs - secondary@home.com
  • Main.EngineeringGroup

The first entry is the default form, the notification gets sent to the e-mail address specified in the user's home page. The second entry lists an alternative e-mail address. The third entry specifies a group, the notification gets sent to each member of the group.

AMIARCS Web Preferences

The following settings are web preferences of the AMIARCS web. These preferences overwrite the site-level preferences in TWikiPreferences, and can be overwritten by user preferences (your personal topic, eg: TWikiGuest in the Main web).

Preferences:

  • List of topics of the TWiki.AMIARCS web:

  • Web specific background color: (Pick a lighter one of the StandardColors)
    • Set WEBBGCOLOR = #D0D0D0

  • List this web in the SiteMap:
    • If yes, set SITEMAPLIST to on, do not set NOSEARCHALL, and add the "what" and "use to..." description for the site map. Make sure to list only links that include the name of the web, e.g. AMIARCS.Topic links.
    • Set SITEMAPLIST = on
    • Set SITEMAPWHAT = Workshop of Medical Augmented Reality at MICCAI 06
    • Set SITEMAPUSETO = ...collaborate on

  • Exclude web from a web="all" search: (Set to on for hidden webs)
    • Set NOSEARCHALL =

  • Prevent automatic linking of WikiWords and acronyms (if set to on); link WikiWords (if empty); can be overwritten by web preferences:
    • Set NOAUTOLINK =
    • Note: Use the [[...][...]] syntax to link topics in case you disabled WikiWord linking. The <noautolink> ... </noautolink> syntax can be used to prevents links within a block of text.

  • Default template for new topics and form(s) for this web:
    • WebTopicEditTemplate?: Default template for new topics in this web. (Site-level is used if topic does not exist)
    • TWiki.WebTopicEditTemplate: Site-level default template
    • TWikiForms: How to enable form(s)
    • Set WEBFORMS =

  • Users or groups who are not / are allowed to view / change / rename topics in the AMIARCS web: (See TWikiAccessControl)
    • Set DENYWEBVIEW =
    • Set ALLOWWEBVIEW =
    • Set DENYWEBCHANGE =
    • Set ALLOWWEBCHANGE =
    • Set DENYWEBRENAME =
    • Set ALLOWWEBRENAME =

  • Users or groups allowed to change or rename this WebPreferences topic: (I.e. TWikiAdminGroup)

  • Web preferences that are not allowed to be overridden by user preferences:
    • Set FINALPREFERENCES = NOSEARCHALL, ATTACHFILESIZELIMIT, WIKIWEBMASTER, WEBCOPYRIGHT, WEBTOPICLIST, DENYWEBVIEW, ALLOWWEBVIEW, DENYWEBCHANGE, ALLOWWEBCHANGE, DENYWEBRENAME, ALLOWWEBRENAME

Notes:

  • A preference is defined as:
    6 spaces * Set NAME = value
    Example:
    • Set WEBBGCOLOR = #FFFFC0
  • Preferences are used as TWikiVariables by enclosing the name in percent signs. Example:
    • When you write variable %WEBBGCOLOR% , it gets expanded to #D0D0D0 .
  • The sequential order of the preference settings is significant. Define preferences that use other preferences first, i.e. set WEBCOPYRIGHT before WIKIWEBMASTER since %WEBCOPYRIGHT% uses the %WIKIWEBMASTER% variable.
  • You can introduce new preferences variables and use them in your topics and templates. There is no need to change the TWiki engine (Perl scripts).
